The Prologue and Purpose of the Gospel (Luke 1:1–4)

(VS 1.) "Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration (means many were attempting at that time to write accounts of the Life and Ministry of Christ, which proved to have no inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and consequently, were unreliableof those things which are most surely believed among us" (proclaims the Gospel as a narrative concerning facts fully established).

(VS 2.) It talks about those who were there and actually observed what took place. The Apostles, disciples, and followers were the original "eyewitnesses."

(VS 3.) "It seemed good to me also (I believe the Holy Spirit moved himhaving had perfect understanding of all things from the very first means that he made certain of the reliability of these "eyewitness accounts"), to write unto you in order (refers to an orderly design, not necessarily in chronological order), most excellent Theophilus (Not much information is given about who Theophilus was, but scholars believe he was a Gentile of high rank in the Roman world of that day, who had accepted Christ as his Saviour).

(VS 4.) "That you might know the certainty of those things (means that Theophilus could rely on what Luke told him), wherein you have been instructed (He "Theophilus" will now be able to sort the facts from the fiction; Luke writing this Gospel to Theophilus has helped people to "know" the "certainty of these things").

Luke is the only one of the four Gospels that stated his purpose at the beginning of his book. Luke wanted to give Theophilus an orderly account of the events or things in Jesus's life. Many people had compiled or put together the events that had happened, and these stories were given to us by people who witnessed the things Jesus did.
Theophilus was a Christian of prominence which means he was a person that held an important office or role. Theophilus was an elder in Corinth. Some theologians believe that he was a Gentile that received some introductory teachings about Christ. Therefore, Luke wanted to give him an accurate account of the events concerning the life of Jesus.
Theophilus's name means "lover of God." Theophilus must have been an official because Luke used the word" most excellent." In the book of Acts, "most excellent" was used when referencing someone in a political position. (Acts 23:26; 24:3; 26:25 )
