Life was not easy for the people that returned to Jerusalem. The majority of the Jews decided not to return to Jerusalem because they didn't want to start over. Seventy years of living in captivity under the control of the Babylonians has changed their outlook on God's law.

Solomon's Temple, built under Solomon, was destroyed in 587 BCE by the Neo-Babylonian Empire. The Second Temple (built under the Persian Empire) was destroyed in 70 CE by the Roman Empire.
