Author
The Apostle John is the author of the Book of John. The writer of this Gospel did not state his name, but there are internal evidence and external evidence that the writer was the Apostle John.
John was the son of Zebedee -(Mark 1:20)
He had a brother, James -( not the writer of the epistle) (Matthew 4:21-22)
Close to Jesus, inner circle (Transfiguration) and it is said Jesus loved him- (Matthew 17; John 21)
Zealous, impatient, intolerant- (Luke 9:54)
Jesus entrusted Mary to his care -(John 19:26-27)
Worked with Peter in Jerusalem- (Acts 3)
We also have writers of the period referring to John in their letters that give us more information about him. Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, reveals that:
John made his home and worked in Ephesus after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, which was a key influence on him and his writings.
From here, he wrote this Gospel and three of his epistles around 80 AD.
He was eventually exiled to the Isle of Patmos by the Roman emperor Domitian around 94-96 AD, and from here, he wrote the Book of Revelation.
Date
Many scholars believe that John wrote his Gospel between 85 and 95 AD; another possible date is between 65 and 95 AD.
The Purpose & Audience
John wrote his Gospel to all people. "Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book (of John); but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31)ESV.
The Purpose & Audience: Extra Notes
John wrote when the difference between Jew and Gentile had disappeared (after the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in 70 AD). He is writing from Asia Minor, where false doctrines such as Gnosticism are challenging the claims of Christianity, and so his purpose is to show Jesus as the Son of God and that salvation is found by faith in HIM alone.
Theme & Overview
The Book of John is different from Matthew, Mark, and Luke, highlighting events not detailed in the others.
John presents Jesus as the Word, the Messiah, and the Incarnate Son of God, who has come to reveal the Father and bring eternal life to all who believe in HIM.
John highlights Christ's nature. The Book of John tells the story of the eternal Word who became flesh and dwelt with humanity. Jesus proves who he is, dealt with humanity's problems, and clarifies what is necessary for everyone to receive everlasting life.
Characteristics
John points out the deity of Jesus and Jesus's true identity.
Some key words in this Book are: "believe," witness, love, abide, the Counselor, light, life, darkness, Word, glorify, true, and real.
John omitted Jesus's genealogy, birth, baptism, temptation, casting out demons, parables, transfiguration, the institution of the Lord's Supper, agony in Gethsemane, and ascension. John focused on Jesus's ministry in Jerusalem, the Jewish feasts, Jesus's private conversations with individuals, and HIS preparation of HIS disciples for what lay ahead of them.
John gave sevens miracles or signs that demonstrated that Jesus was the divine Messiah who was promised in the Old Testament. He also recorded Jesus's discourses following these signs that explained their significance.

Below is a video made by Allen Parr. He has some interesting facts that I do not have in my reports. For example, he goes into details about the different (7 “Signs”), and the (7 “I AM” Statements) and more. My recommend starting point is @ 10:21 in the video.
Please watch his video. There are tons of information that I did not cover or go over in detail the way he did.
